Who doesn’t love a fresh start every year? Not only have we entered a new year, but also a new decade. I took a few days off to relax and enjoy the holiday as well as reflect on the past decade and what I want to accomplish for the new decade. Last year I chose a word to reflect what I wanted 2019 to be and I chose the word “fun”. I definitely accomplished this as I traveled to places such as Costa Rica, Charleston, London, Belgium and Asheville. I also did things such as enjoyed summer days by the pool, went to an outdoor movie, had an autumn hike through the woods, visited events and festivals in Downtown Raleigh as well as visited Biltmore Estate for their Christmas display.
Fun will still be part of my life in 2020, but for this year I chose the word “committed” as my word of the year. There are some things that I want to accomplish this year like paying off debt, taking better care of my health and learning more about my new job, so this year I want to commit to these things and really focus on accomplishing some goals in these areas in particular for 2020. I feel that these three areas will set me up for a better future and therefore getting into better habits to start the new decade will only set me up for success for the coming years of 2020.
I also want to slow down some and create more elegance and simplicity in my life. I think we can all use a little more of these things in this fast paced and overstuffed modern life. Here are a few habits and directions that I will be using to help create a more beautiful and simplistic life.
+Quality, not quantity. In all areas of life. Everything from clothing, food, linens, friends, what I consume (tv, movies, books, etc).
+More time offline – It’s so easy to lose hours of our life lost in Instagram, Pinterest and so on. One thing I know for sure, my best life is not lived scrolling online.
+Fewer, But Better – Kind of goes with the quality direction. I want to have fewer, but better things such as clothes, beauty items, accessories, kitchen things, books and basically any tangible thing.
+More Time For Myself – Time for picnics, to read books, relaxing baths, walks in nature, basically just time to enjoy these little luxurious moments more.
+More Adventures – Road trips, hiking, festivals, movie nights, trying new foods, going to more live shows and all the fun little things that truly enrich my life.
Let’s face it, one day (hopefully) we will be 90 or 100 and I know that I will want to look back at my life as one fun adventure. Although the “tasks” of life will always be there waiting, I do not want to look back and just remember accomplishing one to-do list after another. I want to remember having fun, going on adventures, traveling, spending time with those I love, small luxurious moments and just overall having a beautiful and amazing life.
I have already done far more than I could have ever imagined. I have traveled to eight countries, enjoyed beautiful sunsets over the Pacific ocean, walked the beautiful streets of London, enjoyed sitting in cafes in Paris, enjoyed decadent chocolates and waffles in Belgium and visited wine festivals in Germany. These are the memories I have created for myself and I plan to create many more in the coming decade.
