Newer homes and apartments nowadays are often built with spacious walk in closets which provides a lot of space and storage for people’s wardrobe and accessories. However I live in a townhouse that was built in the 80’s and therefore it was not built with a walk in closet. I actually do not mind this as it is a great reminder to only bring in what I truly love and will wear instead of stuffing my closet full of items that will easily get lost in the shuffle.
I love that my closet provides me with just enough space to bring in a curated capsule wardrobe and nothing too superfluous. I do switch out my wardrobe seasonally from spring/summer to winter/fall and then there are some pieces that works for both seasons, but there is always enough space for what I need. Here is how I make it work.
-It should come as no surprise that in order to have an organized small closet that you must first pare down how many items that you bring in. This is the main key to an organized and uncluttered closet: less stuff. If you have too many items then it becomes hard to fit it all in and if it gets too crowded then the items start to wrinkle because they are bunched up on each other. It is also harder to see what you have and it can become overwhelming to put together an outfit everyday.
-I also organize the clothing by type, sleeve length and color. This helps me find exactly what I need on any given day as I keep all of my pants, sleeveless tops, short sleeve tops and long sleeve tops grouped together and then I sort those by color. It’s an easy system to keep up and makes finding certain items very easy.
-One way I store items in the closet without looking too cluttered is by using baskets and storage containers. I just use what I already have around the house instead spending extra money to buy new ones. I have a big wicker basket that I store my denim in, I have a small fabric basket for belt storage, I also have a large fabric basket for workout clothes and shorts as well as a small white basket to store my wallets and clutches. It’s an easy storage solution to keep the closet looking neat and organized.
-And then of course there are the shoes. Since this is not a walk in closet I do not have the luxury of built in shelving for my shoes, so I picked up a shoe rack from Target and honestly it works out perfectly. I do organize my shoes as well keeping things like the type of shoes and color of the shoes together. Since I only have 22 pairs of shoes it is easy to keep them organized and stored in my small closet. The small closet once again reminds me not to bring in too much things because I will not have enough space for it all.
Overall I enjoy my closet even if it is not a walk in closet or a whole room with built in shelves and an island. I try to keep it minimal with my belongings and this includes wardrobe and accessories. It is important to not create waste whether through conspicuous consumption, time, money or energy and keeping things minimal really helps with all of the above. Just because a space is not big does not mean that it cannot be beautiful and functional, in fact I have found that I actually prefer small and cozier spaces to large and overfilled ones. Home is meant to be a place of love and comfort, not a warehouse showing off all the things that you bought. A smaller closet for me has been a true joy and easy to maintain.
