When it comes to makeup and beauty items, it is so easy to accidentally purchase more than you truly need. There seems to be an endless amount of palettes, mascaras, blushes and bronzers and eye liners and lipsticks and it just goes on and on. I love beauty products, but I also don’t want to clutter up my counters with unnecessary items that would either get used very little or would expire before I had the chance to use it all.
Beauty items are not cheap, not even the drugstore brands when you take into account all of the items one will need in order to do their makeup. Then, if you throw in fringe items such as lip liners, primers, eyebrow products, serums and tools then you really are looking a large investment. The two main reasons why I take a minimalist approach to makeup is to first keep from cluttering up my space and secondly to not spend more money than I need to. My time and space are very important to me and creating a “one item approach” to my makeup has really saved me both over the years.
I have a mix of luxury and drugstore brands of makeup, but all pieces that I have are quality. I will list all of the items that I currently use below if you are interested in knowing. I am not a beauty guru who spends a lot of time applying makeup and contouring and using a lot of different products or tools. I like my makeup to look natural and to highlight the best features of my face. Here are some of the minimalist approaches that I have taken to accomplish what works for me.
-Highlight One Feature – We all have that one great feature on our face that we really want to highlight. Some girls have beautiful pouty lips, some have amazing cheek bones and some even have long luscious eyelashes or big bold brows. For me, I like to highlight my eyes. I have these deep brown eyes that also have a pretty shape to them, so most of the makeup and tools that I have are used for my eyes. I splurge on the eyeshadow, primer and mascara and save on the eyeliner and brow pencil. I only keep one of each item while also having one eyeshadow palette with different colors that can create either a lighter look or a darker one.
-Mix Luxury and Drugstore Brands – As much as I do love the luxury brands in makeup, I am also a budget minded girl who likes to save money where she can. It can take a little trial and error to find some good luxury brand dupes, but if you find a good one then it was well worth the time and effort. Some items I have found to just be better in the luxury category such as primers (face and eyes), eyeshadow and foundation. But some of the items that I have found to work just as well for me in the drugstore brands are eyeliner, eyebrow pencil and blush.
-Quality Over Quantity – I use this philosophy in all parts of my life, so of course the same goes for my makeup. I do not need a lot of pieces to create the natural look that I like, but the ones that I do purchase needs to be quality. With quality makeup you know that the look will last a long time, that the makeup will not just melt off of your face and that you get the results you are looking for. I have used eyeshadows that when I put it on my eyes it was not the same color as it was in the palette or it was too translucent that you couldn’t really see the color at all. This is not quality and then you either have to return it (time out of your day) or you keep it until it basically expires and then you trash it anyways. Quality will save you from both of these situations every time.
-Have The Right Tools – When I see jars full of beauty tools I wonder how one decides which to use and when. I have seen drawers or cups full of beauty tools on pinterest, instagram and youtube and I wonder if surely it is like a closet full of clothes in which we wear 20% of what we have 80% of the time? Are people using only 20% of their beauty tools 80% of the time? No one surely needs that many tools and brushes lying around unless you do makeup for living. I made sure to purchase one quality tool to perform its one job. I have one brush for eyeshadow, eyeliner, blush and foundation. I also have one tool for eyelash curling. Not only does this keep from accumulating clutter, but it also saves me time when I need to clean my brushes since there is only a few of them.
-Know Where To Save – Since I like my makeup to be more natural and I only highlight the one feature, that means that I know where I can really save my money. For me this is on lip products. I am not really a lipstick or lip gloss kind of girl. I like to keep my lips bare, so I only really use a lip conditioner to keep them glossy and healthy. I have been using Caudalie’s lip conditioner for years and I love how it feels on my lips and that the taste isn’t overpowering. It is made from natural and anti aging ingredients which is part of why I love it too. One tube lasts for a year, so there is no need to buy more than one at a time. I save a lot of money on lip products since I do not need things like lip liners, brushes, lipsticks or lip glosses in different shades. I do have two lip glosses that I keep for the occasional night out use, but otherwise I just stick to my lip conditioner.
I think makeup and beauty products are worth the investment in time and money. Makeup can make you feel confident, fun and create a lot of pretty looks for day, night, for the office or a date night. I do believe that one can also create these looks while also having a minimalist approach to makeup. I have seen some youtube videos where people have decluttered their makeup and some of them not only thew out hundreds of dollars worth of makeup that was barely used, but some threw out thousands of dollars worth of makeup from very high end brands. It just seemed like such a waste of money, a waste of time spent on shopping for the products and yet even more time wasted having to declutter them.
I wanted to create a minimalist approach so that I would never need to throw away something that was barely used or expired, especially a product that I spent my hard earned money on.
I also appreciate that it does not take up a lot of space on my bathroom counter and that I am able to see everything that I have. I am also not having to deal with decision fatigue first thing in the morning by trying to either figure out where a certain product is or which product/tool I am going to use. Since I only have one product and one tool for each thing it makes it so much easier to go through my makeup routine each day without hassle.
