Hello and welcome back! I took time off of work last week as well as the blog to do some relaxing and enjoying some time with the husband as well as alone. Since I had the week off my husband and I planned to take a day trip to Wilmington for a beach day and then to stay over night to explore a little. Because of the coronavirus we did not want to travel anywhere too far or dangerous, so Wilmington was a good option being only two hours away from Raleigh.
We left Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. and we were on the beach by 11:30 a.m. Luckily it was a sunny day because it had rained every other day that week.
We sat up our blanket and umbrella in a nice spot several feet away from other people and relaxed a little. But then I was ready to go for a swim, so we went to the ocean to cool off and swim. Swimming in the ocean (when it’s not too wavy) is so relaxing to me. I love letting my body float along with the waves and enjoy the sun on my skin. It is summer personified.
After our swim we went back to our blanket and enjoyed a picnic on the beach. I packed up some turkey sandwiches on freshly baked baguette that morning. It was a simple and perfect lunch to enjoy.
After lunch we went for another long swim and then laid out on the blanket again to get dry before packing everything up to go to our airbnb in Wilmington. But first, we stopped off for coffee because #gettingtired.
After we checked into our Airbnb we went out to an early dinner to an outdoor seafood restaurant by the river. The Airbnb was a lovely condo with a balcony right over the water.
After dinner we walked around downtown Wilmington discovering its charm and cute buildings along the way.
We stopped in a used book store that was so cute and quite big. I could have spent hours in there as the store went so far back into the building. They also had all these used chairs tucked away in little nooks of the store too. I was simply in love from the moment I walked in.
Whenever I visit an new city I also love to notice all of the details. Things such eye catching floors, intricate carvings and ornate doors always catch my attention. This is part of the joie de vivre for me of visiting new cities.
One of the last places we visited was the federal courthouse. This building was tall and beautiful and looked right at home in this little beach community. I especially loved the water fountain.
The next morning we woke up and walked over to the bagel and coffee shop to get some breakfast. We took it back to our Airbnb to enjoy on the waterfront balcony before packing up and driving home. It was a short, but sweet trip to Wilmington. It was a small city near the beach that charmed me and made me feel at home.
