I have worked many years trying to find a good hair care routine that suits my lifestyle and hair type. I have fine, straight-ish hair that also tends to get oily quite easy. And now that I live in Florida, I have had to make adjustments still to adapt to the humidity. I can’t lie though, I love that the humidity gives my hair some volume, but it also sucks the moisture right out of my hair too.
Like everything else in my life, I try to keep my routine simple, but effective. I have tried many products and routines over the years and I have found one that achieves everything I have been looking for.
I wash my hair every other day, so I like to use this Kristin Ess The One Signature Shampoo and Conditioner that I get from Target. It is lightly clarifying, so it removes any buildup from products/oil/sweat very effectively. I have tried some pretty expensive shampoos/conditioners over the years, but I love the way this one makes my hair smell and feel. The smell is light, but very pleasing and it lathers nicely too without any added sulfates.
After washing and conditioning in the shower, I do use a blow dryer to dry my hair. I use the warm/high setting to get my hair about 90% dry and then use the cold shot to seal the hair cuticles so that it keeps my hair healthy and it ensures a long lasting blow-dried look. After it is dried and brushed out I do run a flat iron through my hair too. My hair can get naturally wavy, but not those cute beachy waves, just kind of messy looking waves. So, I like to straighten it as I think it looks better and more polished.
On the days that I don’t wash my hair, I use a dry shampoo. I have tried many dry shampoos and didn’t like most of them, but I have two in particular that I love to use which are Moroccan Oil Light Tones Dry Shampoo and OUAI Super Dry Shampoo. Both of these have been wonderful for my hair as they soak up the excess oil without leaving any stickiness or residue. I have used some dry shampoos that felt like straight up hair spray and not only did not soak up the oil, but made my hair stiff like a hairspray too. I am so happy that I finally found two good options that I can easily pick up at any Sephora.
And lastly, once a week on Saturday or Sunday I will use a hair mask. Depending on what I need most, I will either use the Trader Joe’s Shea Butter & Coconut Oil Mask (Purchased at Trader Joe’s) or the Nexxus Keraphix Damage healing Mask (Purchased at Target). I really just alternate between the two each week. The Trader Joe’s mask is great for smoothing and hydrating the hair giving it a pretty, silky shine. A hair mask like this is very useful in Florida due to the humidity. Then the next week I will use the Nexxus mask which is great for repairing damaged hair from things like using the blow dryer/flat iron as well as removing product buildup from the dry shampoos.
Finding a good hair care routine can take some time and investment to find what works for your hair. I am happy that I have found a sweet spot so far that really does my hair well. My hair stylist always raves about how well my hair holds up in between coloring/cuts. I have also been thinking about incorporating a hair serum to the mix, so I will let you know how that goes if/when I do. One thing I did forget to mention above is that I do occasionally spray in some Nuxe hair/body oil onto my hair after showering to give a nice silky look too. Some days are just very high humidity and the this oil really tames that dry, frizzy look. The oil is very light and smells amazing, I highly recommend it for anyone who needs a little hair smoothing.
